TRACK LIST

  1. Danza Sul Vulcano (Dance on a Volcano)

Danza Sul Vulcano is a radical reworking of a piece originally released on the first album Risonanze, where it existed in a purely symphonic form. In III Movimento, it is completely reimagined as a symphonic progressive composition through the organic integration of the band and a deep revision of the musical writing.

The orchestration expands into a dense, layered texture, with extensive use of keyboards, orchestra, and rhythm section, in a continuous dialogue between progressive energy and symphonic architecture. The writing is deliberately thick and articulated, built almost entirely on odd meters, creating constant tension and a sense of unstable motion.

A long central episode for drums and percussion becomes a structural element of the piece, reinforcing its physical and choreographic dimension. Danza Sul Vulcano opens the work by immediately declaring its nature: music that lives on the edge, suspended between risk, transformation, and expressive energy.

2. Igrayne

Igrayne is a fictional figure, freely inspired by the character from the film Excalibur, the future mother of King Arthur. In the film, her dancing gesture celebrates peace, yet unknowingly becomes a trigger for desire, conflict, and destiny.

The composition does not follow an explicit narrative, but distills the emotional essence of the scene: attraction, suspension, desire, inevitability. Musically, the piece is built around an intimate dialogue between electric guitar, strings, and synthesizers, with a writing style largely based on two-part counterpoint.

The musical language leans toward a psychedelic and romantic sensibility, creating a hypnotic and introspective atmosphere. Igrayne represents a moment of suspension and emotional depth within the broader architecture of III Movimento.

3. Quadri(Pictures)

Quadri is a semi-original composition officially recognized by SIAE and credited to Musorgskij / Carnevale. The piece draws inspiration from Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Musorgskij, while following a radically different path from the most well-known historical interpretations.

Unlike Maurice Ravel’s orchestration, which transforms the original piano work into a fully autonomous orchestral piece, or the progressive adaptation by Emerson, Lake & Palmer, this version preserves Musorgskij’s original piano score in its entirety, making it the structural core of the composition.

Around this core, a new rhythmic-symphonic architecture is developed, integrating fragments from different sections of Pictures at an Exhibition and a quotation from Night on Bald Mountain. The result is a work articulated in movements that differ widely in tempo, impact, and expressive tension, with gesture, dynamics, and movement remaining central.

Quadri is neither a transcription nor a simple reinterpretation, but a true creative reconstruction, in which pianistic tradition, symphonic orchestra, and progressive language coexist within a single expressive form.

4. Il cammino(The Path)

Il Cammino is an entirely symphonic piece and represents a singular presence within III Movimento. Initially conceived as an orchestral sketch during the early stages of the project, it revealed over time an expressive strength that made any further elaboration unnecessary.

That first version was therefore preserved in its original form, maintaining its internal balance and authenticity. The music unfolds in broad narrative arcs, with a fluid and continuous development, free from any involvement of the band.

Il Cammino evokes the image of a collective and uninterrupted movement, a human advance shaped by tensions, impulses, waiting, and transformation. The symphonic dimension becomes a metaphor for time, progression, and the search for meaning.

5-6. Incompiuta

5-6. Incompiuta is conceived as a single work articulated in two parts, both born from a compositional experience directly connected to choreographic work.

The composition originates from a choreography by Maria Teresa Dal Medico, upon which the music was created in direct synchrony with the movements of the dancers’ bodies, without any prior written score. Gesture, dynamics, bodily tension, and breath become compositional material, transforming the choreography itself into musical structure.

From a dramaturgical and energetic perspective, the First Part is associated with a female choreographic section, while the Second Part develops from a male choreographic section. Together, the two parts complete the expressive arc of the work, restoring Incompiuta as a unified and coherent process.

This body-centered compositional approach, born from a direct dialogue with movement and dance, has become one of the most recognizable characteristics of Tony Carnevale’s work for choreography and performance.

THE PROJECT

III MOVIMENTO – A Dance Opera for Symphonic Rock Orchestra

III Movimento is a dance opera for symphonic orchestra and band, conceived as a musical work designed for the movement of bodies. Musical writing becomes the space in which gesture, choreography, and stage presence take shape, through a continuous dialogue between sonic architecture and physical energy.

The third discographic release by Tony Carnevale, originally released in 1999, III Movimento was part of a triple box set together with Risonanze (1990) and La Vita Che Grida (1995). The three works formed the soundtrack of the homonymous choreographic opera.

The Extended Edition, analogically remastered, now restores III Movimento as an autonomous and complete work, through a process of artistic and sonic recovery that enhances its timbral depth, dynamic range, and the relationship between orchestra and band. This new edition also reunites Incompiuta in its unified form and includes a semi-original reworking of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Musorgskij, officially recognized by SIAE and credited to Musorgskij / Carnevale.

III Movimento – A Dance Opera for Symphonic Rock Orchestra has been staged in both national and international contexts, including the Teatro Olimpico in Rome and the Cairo Opera House. The work was created with choreography by Elisabetta Melchiorri, with Tony Carnevale’s authorial participation in the choreographic development, confirming the deeply scenic, theatrical, and performative nature of the project.
