Berklee Library Acquires Beyond Notes

Beyond Notes: Unlocking the Creative and Emotional Power Through Music, subtitled The ANORA Method: Psychodynamic Exploration for Music Education and Creative Development, by Tony Carnevale and published by Soundtrack, has been acquired and cataloged in the Stan Getz Library at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

The book’s inclusion in the Berklee library marks a new step in the international circulation of a body of research that began in Italy more than forty years ago and has progressively developed through artistic practice, publications, formative activities, and laboratories.

Particularly significant are the Subject Headings under which Beyond Notes has been indexed in the Berklee catalog:

Music – Psychological aspects
Music – Instruction and study

These two bibliographic headings reflect some of the central areas of Carnevale’s research: the psychological and psychodynamic dimensions of musical experience, creative processes, formative processes, and the development of artistic identity.

The path that led to the ANORA Method has its roots in Carnevale’s early research on the human reaction to sound, which began in the 1980s, and subsequently developed through research, artistic and professional practice, and formative practice. Beginning in 2000, these principles also found application in laboratory-based experiences at the Licinio Refice Conservatory in Frosinone, where this line of research continues today through the Laboratorio di Direzione Artistica della Produzione Musicale (Artistic Direction in Music Production Laboratory).

Over the years, the project has also encountered different forms of institutional attention and support. In 2005, the laboratories received the patronage of SIAE and, for several years, were supported through contributions from IMAIE. More recently, the ANORA Method was the subject of a webinar organized by INDIRE, with the participation of the Italian Ministry of Education and Merit and Annalisa Spadolini, President of the National Committee for Practical Music Learning, focusing on the principles and perspectives of the Method.

The research has also been progressively developed and systematized through a series of publications, from Il pensiero e il suono (2010) to Oltre le note – Un approccio non razionale alla musica (2022), from which Beyond Notes explicitly originates while further developing the research for an international context.
The book brings to the foreground two concepts already present in its subtitle, Psychodynamic Exploration and Creative Development, together with the study of the processes that precede the technical and compositional organization of music.

A dialogue connected to Berklee had already begun through the English-language conversation ANORA Meets Berklee with Simone Scazzocchio, a faculty member at Berklee College of Music, who wrote the introduction to Beyond Notes and had previously trained in Carnevale’s laboratories through the principles of the ANORA Method. The presence of Beyond Notes in the Stan Getz Library therefore represents a further step in the international circulation of the ANORA Method and of the research underlying it, making the work available for consultation, study, and critical engagement within the academic environment of Berklee College of Music.
